We’re looking for Volunteer Therapy Assistants to join our team

Just imagine…

… helping a stroke survivor regain sufficient strength to walk upstairs like they used to,
… supporting an ex-serviceman to get out of his wheelchair unaided,
… assisting someone recuperating after a brain operation to restore their balance,
… restoring mobility to a sports enthusiast after he suffered a shattered hip.

You’re imagining being a volunteer at the West Berkshire Therapy Centre, where unique power-assisted exercise makes a real difference to independence, well-being, and everyday life for clients with a wide range of challenges.

Clients may be coping with a long-term health condition, or recuperating after operation or injury.  They may be wheelchair users. All will have been assessed by a Therapy Centre staffer at an initial appointment, and then start on a bespoke programme of exercise.

The smart machines at the Centre in Thatcham do as much or as little of the work required, and part of your role as a volunteer therapy assistant will be to ensure the equipment is used safely while helping monitor client progress…as strength and mobility improves the machines will do less and less of the work.

No special qualifications are needed.  A caring approach, a wish to support others at a time of need, and a reasonable level of fitness are the key requirements. Training will be provided, expenses are paid, hours are flexible, and you will never be left to try and cope on your own.

Here’s what Therapy Centre volunteer Heather says:

“I have been a volunteer for 10 years and I can honestly say it’s uplifting! You see the difference the exercises make to people and their demeanour changes and it’s not just the exercises but the camaraderie that they share with fellow clients. It really is a privilege to work there.”

John, another volunteer, says:

“I have always enjoyed working with people to achieve goals they didn’t think they could achieve. I retired in 2022 and looked at various volunteering roles through the volunteering centre in Newbury. Sports and fitness has always played a big part of my life and I saw this role as an opportunity to give a little of my passion back to others.

“At the West Berkshire Therapy Centre, we offer individuals with challenging lives, an opportunity to exercise on specialised equipment designed to give anyone the opportunity to develop their bodies. As a volunteer  it is our role to ensure clients use the machines safely and to get the maximum benefits from the centre; it is important that our clients feel relaxed and safe while using the equipment.

“Much of our role is talking with clients to encourage and show how equipment can be safely used. The work is rewarding as many of our clients gain so much from using the equipment.”

West Berkshire Therapy Centre is an independent charity founded in 2014. It is not part of the NHS or West Berkshire Council, and is largely funded by donations from users.

If you’d like to learn more about this opportunity, please feel free to pop by or get in touch.
